stress

“If your teeth are clenched and your fists are clenched, your lifespan is probably clenched.”
-Adabella Radici

“If you ask what is the single most important key to longevity, I would have to say it is avoiding worry, stress and tension. And if you didn’t ask me, I’d still have to say it.”
-George Burns

“When I hear somebody sigh, ‘Life is hard’, I am always tempted to ask, ‘Compared to what?'”
-Sydney Harris

Deep sigh. Deep, deeeeep, sigh.

What a day.

I was an absolute stress monster today, dahling.

Everything was fine until—horror of horrors!—I misplaced my cell phone.

I totally came unglued. It wasn’t cute.

It was all downhill from there. My ultrastressed ass couldn’t handle anything. I was a five-star mess.

My sister put things in perspective after I screeched “F**k my liiiife!” in the Target parking lot.

What’s the big deal?!” she said. “Things are good. You had some retail therapy, found cute clothes for the babies, and finished your errands. Why freak out?”

Arrrrgharrgharrblebarrggh!!!” I replied.

A few minutes after we got home, I found my phone. It was in a fairly obvious place. Big surprise. Woo.

Pearl and I took a long nap. She woke up crabby. I feel better… embarrassed, but better. I don’t think I’ll stress so much next time something doesn’t go my way—especially if it’s something that ridiculously non-serious. There are far bigger and more serious things happening in this world. Stopping to smell the roses is a far better idea than stomping to tell-off the… something that rhymes with roses.

A Roberta Flack song, “Compared to What”, has been stuck in my head throughout this post draft. I just realized it’s due to the third quote up there, by Sydney Harris (“When I hear somebody sigh, ‘Life is hard’, I am always tempted to ask, ‘Compared to what?'”). Let’s listen to the song and feel good.
